Screening Days in Cambridge

Our screening days in Cambridge are run by CRY and hosted at the University of Cambridge Sports Centre. By the end of 2026 we will have screened over 1500 people! For each screening day we have 100 slots, given the demand these can book out fast.

Make sure to sign up to our expression of interest form for future screenings both to be notified when bookings open and so we can show how large demand for these are and how crucial it is to extend this offering!

Screening Days in South West London

Working with CRY and in collaboration with the NHS and with local community and sports clubs, we aim to screen around 4500 young people over a 3 year initiative.

We want to ensure that young people are fit to play sport safely at whatever level. Undiagnosed heart conditions do not just affect elite sportspeople and testing should be accessible to all communities of active young people.

About CRY

Since its formation in 1995, Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) has been working to reduce the frequency of young sudden cardiac death (YSCD).

CRY's mission to prevent young sudden cardiac deaths by promoting awareness, conducting screenings, and supporting affected families. The CRY screening programme has tested more than 350,000.

CRY Website

About the tests

An Electrocardiogram (ECG) looks at the electrical conduction pathways around the heart. Small stickers known as electrodes are placed on the patients chest and the wires connect to an ECG machine whilst you lie still. A printout of the heart’s electrical activity is obtained for evaluation by the cardiologist. This test is painless, non-invasive and takes only a few minutes to perform.

If required you might also be given an Echo test. Echocardiogram (Echo) is an ultrasound test  which looks at the structure of the heart. From the information provided on screen, measurements are taken which give a guide to heart muscle thickness and the size of the chambers of the heart. This test is non-invasive and painless; and it takes approximately 20 minutes to perform.

Quotes from our screening days

"Quick, easy, non-invasive. Thanks for offering this important initiative!"

"Thank you for making health proactive rather than reactive and save lives."

"Thank you for this campaign. I was always a bit worried about my heart and it’s nice to feel relieved."

Kate's Experience

Being Screened

"I was screening during October screenings. The process of being screened was so much faster and easier than I expected! The ECG itself felt like it took 2 minutes and was totally painfree."

Further investigation

"After further testing with CRY on the day, I was referred for further investigations. Fortunately these tests came out all clear despite intial signs of abnormality.”

Outcome

"I feel so much more confident doing exercise now in the knowledge that these tested have been taken seriously."

Our Past Screenings

So far we have screened over 1500 people of which over 65 have been identified with the need for further investigation.

From the get-go, we had an incredible team from CRY lead by our hero Tony. We were joined by BBC News, Greatest Hits Radio and the Gold medal winning Olympic rower Tom James. Incredible CPR training sessions were organised along side our screenings.

Since those first two days, we have had 6 more the all with our beloved CRY team member Stuart (who has been at all 8 days of our screening so far!). Our screening days have been covered by the Sunday Times, the Telegraph, the Daily Mail and ITV news. Meanwhile, we have been visited by MPs and members of the Lords as well as British Racing School and the NFL with a view to learn how the screenings work. We have also been joined by a wonderful band of volunteers from Hawk's and Osprey's, from the University. Thank you so much to everyone who joined us and contributed to such successful screening days!

Our screenings in Cambridge are generously hosted by the University of Cambridge Sports Centre, and we are so grateful for all the support they give us!
